This week in kindergarten

After the October / November craziness, we enter into three weeks of solid school.  This is a time where we focus on learning and do our best to ignore the mounting excitement about Christmas, Hanukkah and winter break.

We are deep in the heart of basic phonics right now.  This week has no new letters or words, but we continue to focus on using our letters to form simple 3 letter words.  We spend a lot of time substituting letters --  mat to sat to sap to sip to tip to tap...  Most students are having an easy time substituting initial letters, a more challenging time substituting final letters, and a harder time substituting middle vowel sounds.  I have found this "substituting" game a great way to build basic decoding skills.

Here are a few dates to keep in mind...
Friday, December 12 -- Field Trip to NW Library, Noon
Wednesday December 17 --  Late Start
Friday, December 19 -- Last day of school before winter break

This weeks themes:
Theme Book - Whose Garden is it?
Chapter Book Dinosaurs Before Dark
Literary Theme: realism and fantasy
Letters we know: m, a, t, s, p, c, i
Math: December Calendar, comparing sets

Please let me know if you have read a great, kindergarten friendly, chapter book that has been published within the last few years!
