Mr Choate helps with 100 crowns

Volunteers needed --

The March Volunteer calendar is up.  Please consider signing up for a day or ten.  We had a great month in February.

Just in case...  It turns out that I am flying solo today.  Most of the day will be very smooth, but our "100 crowns" will be a little crazy.  If you happen to have time from 9:45 - 10:15, I would love some help with this project.

Thank you!

OMSI Assembly Tomorrow

This just in....

We have an OMSI Assembly tomorrow morning at 8:15.   The assembly is titled "Electrifying Science".  These assemblies are always super-fun and informative.

This means that we will put off our Sea Creature Story Problem day until Monday.  We should be doing centers as usual tomorrow.

Reading time

Math and Science Night

The annual Chapman Math and Science Night is next Tuesday, March 4th from 6:00 to 8:00.  There are a variety of activities including forging coins and learning about reptiles.  This is always a fun evening.

Math: Understanding addition and subtraction through story problems / 3-D shapes

A few random tidbits

Several offers of objects from nature came through today.  It looks like our next several weeks will have a "sea creature" theme (which dovetails nicely with our math curriculum).

We are a little low on snacks.  Think of us as you shop, and remember that we do have two students with tree-nut allergies.

What with report cards, snow days, labor strife and short, dark days, I managed to completely forget to send home readers for more than a month.  Your child should come home today with six readers in his / her pack.  I challenged the students to read one book each day at home.

Next Wednesday will be dedicated to creating sea-creature story problems, next Thursday is 100 day, and will be all about the number 100.  Let me know if your child DID NOT bring home their 100 collection instructions.

Extra Volunteers next Wednesday

I am looking for one or two extra volunteers for next Wednesday, 2/16, to help with a morning of creating "sea creature problems".  I especially need help from 9:30 to 11:00.  Let me know if you are able to volunteer.  Thank you!

Anyone with a great "object from nature"?

I am putting together next week's centers and am looking for an object from nature.  This should be something with a bit of a "wow-factor" but not too precious or fragile (or toxic!).  Let me know via email if you have something that would go well at the science center.

Two Big Reminders

School gets out early today.  Students will be dismissed at 11:45 and all buses should run 2 1/2 hours ahead of schedule!

Library books are due tomorrow!

Early release tomorrow

Hopefully you have received the email below.  Just to recap

1) No strike
2) Early release at 11:45.  Buses should be 2 1/2 hours ahead of schedule.
3) We will have lunch at school before we go.
4) Everything back to normal on Thursday

Good Morning Chapman Community,

Just in case you have not heard the encouraging news, I will share it with you now.  Portland Public Schools and the Portland Association of Teachers have come together with a tentative contract agreement.  At this point there is every indication that there will be no strike.  I would like you to know that across the district, due to timing, an early release is still planned for tomorrow.  All Chapman students will be released, after an early lunch, at 11:45.  Buses will run their regular routes 2.5 hours early.  School will resume Thursday at its regular time.  Thank you so much for your patience.

Respectfully,

Scott Choate

This Week in Room 2

Here is the news for the week of February 18.

First off, please triple check your email, this blog, and anywhere else for news of the week.  Tomorrow (Wednesday) is NOT a late start day, but after that, there seems to be some confusion about dismissal.  Stay tuned...

We had a great Valentine's day Friday, beginning with our performance in pajamas at Friday Roundup, moving into our art project with Morgan, and continuing with our Valentine's exchange before and after lunch.  A fine time was had by all!

This week:
We will continue to work on the words that, are, and do
We will explore the letter Ll
We will continue working on teen numbers, math sentences and 3D shapes
We will celebrate Lamar, our star of the week
We will keep learning our song Goodbye Old Paint

Friday

We have a big day tomorrow with Valentine's day, pajama day, and our Roundup Skit.

Your child can wear their favorite pajamas to school in the morning.  Be sure to bring a coat; we plan on going outside for all recesses.

Your child can should leave their coats and backpacks in our seating area, and then head straight to the stage.

Later in the day, we will exchange Valentines.  Be sure your child's Valentine does not contain candy.

Assembly

This morning we had an assembly with Grupo Condor, playing Andean folk music.

A visit from a falcon

Robyn (Lulu's grandmother) brought in Finnegan, a peregrine falcon, from the Audubon society.

Library Books

Many library books went back to the library last Thursday.

A few were missing on Thursday and a few new ones were checked out by the five students who went to the library.

I would love to see everyone check out a book tomorrow

Snow!

Hopefully I will see everyone tomorrow, but this is questionable...

Most students came home with a Valentine's list (and a no-candy reminder).  Check your child's backpack!  If you are missing a list let me know (our email program does not allow me to broadcast attachments).

If school is cancelled tomorrow, we will do our Roundup skit next Friday.

Have a great time in the snow!
