This week in kindergarten

Here are a few tidbits about the week:

Lost and Found -- A wonderful volunteer, Tiffany, spent several hours today moving the lost and found to the front hall, where it will stay for less than two weeks before being donated to charity. Tiffany took the time to track down all coats with names in them -- she reunited two coats with their Room 2 owners -- but there are still tons of unclaimed coats and miscellany .  Please be sure to check the front hall for your child's missing clothes, and don't forget to put your child's name in her coat -- today was proof positive that it pays off.

Dr. Seuss -- Wednesday is Dr. Seuss' birthday.  We will be doing a variety of activities to celebrate his life and work.

Library Books -- I would love to see fewer kids miss library checkouts.  I always encourage kids to put library books in their backpacks on Sunday so that they are at school on Monday.  This year seems to be a challenging one for getting books back by library day.

Health Screening -- This Thursday is health screening day.  If this is the same as in years past, we should be checking vision, hearing and dental health.

Story Problems -- We will be creating story problems tomorrow morning.  This is always a super fun math day, and kicks off our learning about addition and subtraction.

Leap Day -- We spent some time talking about Leap Day, why we have years, and orbital dynamics this morning (complete with a demonstration).  See if your child can tell you anything coherent about these subjects!!

Schedule change

I was a little over-ambitious in my planning for math.  I am going to do our big day of designing a math story problem next Tuesday instead of tomorrow.  I would love a volunteer or two to help on Tuesday March 1.

OMSI science assembly

Another week in kindergarten

Here is a day-by-day breakdown of our week:

Today should be an ordinary Monday featuring a bunch of new centers plus Mandarin in the morning and music and dance in the afternoon.

We have a "Science Circus assembly early Tuesday morning.  In the afternoon we will go to Ms. Aksay's room for social studies.

On Wednesday we will take the morning to design and write story problems.  This is always a fun activity that integrates math, art and writing.  We could use a volunteer or two to help with this.

Thursday, of course, features P.E., library (don't forget those books), and share day.

On Friday we will write about Jin, go to P.E. see our reading buddies, and do a few special and fun other activities.

Our themes include...

Theme Book: One Little Mouse
Chapter Book; Chicken Squad
New words: one, two, three, four, five (week 2)

Volunteers needed

I'm not sure if this might work for anyone, but we would love a volunteer or two for tomorrow's 100 day celebrations (Friday, 2-19).  We will be making crowns, and this can be a little busy.  We would love help from 9:30 to 11:00.

Thank you so much

100 Day stuff coming home

Check your child's backpack for a 100 grid and instructions.  We plan to share 100 day collections next Friday, February 19.

Friday Notes

The kindergarten extravaganza went off without a hitch.  Both the afternoon performance for the school, and the evening performance for families went very well.  Thank you to everyone who helped with the performance!'

There is no school this Monday due to president's day, and there is a late start on Wednesday.  On Wednesday everything will be two hours late.

We are running low on snacks.  Please think of us as you shop.  To the extent possible, please think nut-free!

We jut finished Abby Hanlon's Dory Fantasmagory.  The kids really loved this chapter book!

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend!

This week in kindergarten

Here are some notes for a busy and sunny week.

The week is, indeed, very busy.  We have the kindergarten meeting for next year's kinders on Tuesday, an OMSI dinosaur class on Wednesday, our program is Thursday and we will celebrate Valentine's day on Friday.  Each day we will be practicing our "extravaganza" and hoping that the rough stone we have now turns into a beautiful gem by Thursday.

We will have a Valentine's party on Friday -- probably after 9:30.  Please have your child leave names off of their Valentine's unless they are able to read all the names in the classes (It can be a HUGE challenge to help even five kids get 23 cards to the right recipients).  If all goes well I will send home a list of all the students in the class tomorrow.  If you would like to volunteer for the party, please let me know.

I am taking advantage of the fact that we remain a little ahead of schedule, curriculum wise, to spend this week reviewing what we have learned.

This week in kindergarten

Here are some notes about our first week in February.

Thank you to everyone who returned their report card envelope.  We love getting these back; your signature lets us know that you have received the report card.  Please be sure to keep the report card -- they make a great gift when your child graduates from college.

Our kindergarten extravaganza is next Thursday, February 11th.  The evening performance is at 6:00.  We will open our classroom doors at 5:30. Be sure to have your child here at 5:45 at the latest.  We will also be giving a performance for the student body at 1:15.  You are welcome to attend this also, but be aware that seating is limited and that students have absolute priority.

It is nice to see volunteers back in the classroom.  The best days in Room 2 are the days when we have parent help.

Thank you to everyone who searched for and found their child's library book.  Last week's library was much better!
