It has been a busy, crazy week...
We had a wonderful time at the 2nd grade musical. The students enjoyed every minute of the performance!
Homework went home Tuesday. Your child should bring in 100 objects on Monday (2/23) for our celebration of the 100th day of kindergarten. We sent home a grid to help with this project. This makes a handy display, but is not necessary.
We are low on snacks. Think of us as you shop this weekend.

This week in Room 2
Here are a few highlights of the week...
On Friday we will be celebrating Valentine's Day from 9:30 to 11:00. Many thanks to Marni for her help with this. Don't forget -- No candy!!!!
We had a visit from Julie Schmidt, an education student from Marylhurst, today. She observed a math lesson and then played her fiddle for the class.
There is no school Monday due to the President's Day holiday. There is a late start Wednesday the 18th. Everything will be two hours behind schedule.

Math: Numbers to 20, counting by 10's and 1's, addition, subitization
Social Studies: Presidents with Ms. Milkovic
New Song:Goodbye Old Paint
Star of the Week: Jake
Education-speak word of the week: subitization -- to instantly glace at a group of objects and perceive how many there are without counting. Adults roll a dice and subitize the number rolled. In kindergarten we use ten-frames, dice and dominoes to work on this skill.

Report Cards coming home today
Most students will be bringing home their report card this afternoon. Please be sure to check your child's backpack.
A few two-household families have requested separate report cards. These will be mailed to each household. There are many more two-household families in our class. If, for any reason, you are not able to get a copy of your child's report card, let me know.
Kindergarten (and elementary) report cards are a bit of a curious creature, both for parents and for teachers. Here are a few of my own thoughts and opinions.
Be aware that we leave much of the report card blank each term. Some subjects are only assessed once, some areas make sense to report on once. Also be aware that there will be an empty space for term one -- the report card was replaced by conferences.
Report cards are a mix of objective information (letter names), subjective information (whether your child is "attentive") and information that teachers simply do their best to guess at ("Applies Health Concepts"). To my mind the most important sections of the report card are the "Characteristics of a Successful Learner" and the comments section. Be aware though, that both are very subjective.
Finally, report cards are a very one-way communication. Feel very free to contact me with any concerns about your child's' academic and social growth.

We are deep in the world of equations. Students are working hard at adding two numbers to make a sum (usually of ten or less). The students are becoming very comfortable with equations such as 3+5=8.
